Hoy se presentan los puntos esenciales de la función cuadrática, también llamada función polinómica de segundo grado: f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c, con a distinto de cero. Su gráfica es una parábola.

1) Estructura y parámetros
- El coeficiente a determina la concavidad: si a > 0, la parábola abre hacia arriba; si a < 0, hacia abajo. Además, cuanto mayor sea |a|, más estrecha es la parábola.
- El dominio es el conjunto de los números reales.

2) Eje de simetría y vértice
- El eje de simetría es la recta x = −b/(2a).
- El vértice V(h, k) se obtiene con h = −b/(2a) y k = f(h). Este punto es un mínimo si a > 0 o un máximo si a < 0.

3) Intersecciones con los ejes
- Intersección con el eje y: en x = 0, por lo tanto el punto es (0, c).
- Intersecciones con el eje x: se calculan resolviendo ax^2 + bx + c = 0. Las soluciones son x = [−b ± √(b^2 − 4ac)] / (2a), cuando el discriminante Δ = b^2 − 4ac es no negativo.

4) Discriminante e interpretación gráfica
- Si Δ > 0: dos cortes reales y distintos con el eje x.
- Si Δ = 0: un corte real doble; el vértice toca el eje.
- Si Δ < 0: no hay cortes reales; la parábola queda por encima del eje x si a > 0, o por debajo si a < 0.

5) Rango o recorrido
- Si a > 0: y ≥ k. Si a < 0: y ≤ k. El límite viene dado por la ordenada del vértice.

6) Forma de vértice y transformaciones
- Equivalente a f(x) = a(x − h)^2 + k. Esta forma muestra:
  - Traslación h unidades en x y k en y.
  - Escalado vertical por |a|.
  - Reflexión respecto del eje x si a < 0.
- Se puede obtener completando el cuadrado o usando h y k como se indicó.

7) Procedimiento de análisis rápido
- Identificar a, b, c.
- Calcular h = −b/(2a) y k = f(h).
